The Cover Letter

Along with your resume, a cover letter is an important component of a successful job search.

What Is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a one page letter to a human resources person and/or hiring manager regarding a specific job that they are hiring for. It is a brief introduction to you, the job you are interested in and any other relevant information you want to include that doesn't appear on your resume. It is usually delivered at the same time as the resume via e-mail or traditional mail.

Start off your cover letter with a personal greeting (a specific name if possible) and mention the position you are interested in and where you saw it (Monster, Careerbuilder, Craigslist, newspaper, etc.).

Next discuss your relevant career background, especially as it applies to the position you are applying for. Here you can highlight and discuss jobs and career activities that may not be covered in the resume. This should be a hefty paragraph or two.

Then, if you like, you can talk about how your experience will help the company you are applying to, reach the goals they are trying to fill. In short, this is where you might like to say that your experience makes you perfect for the job. But don't say you're perfect for the job. Let the background you have outlined say that. "My astronomy and science-related college courses as well as my editing of dozens of astronomical and science books and prior membership in the Amateur Astronomy Association of Princeton provide a rich and relevant background for the Astrophysics Editor position."

Close your cover letter by expressing some enthusiasm for the position or for the company if you like, or just say that you are very much looking forward to hearing from them concerning your application. Then include your sign off and all your contact information at the bottom of the page.

Oh, and reread, edit, and proofread your cover letter. One glaring mistake and your resume and cover letter may end up in the recycle bin (virtual or actual). Have another pair of eyes take a look at it.
